The eldest daughter of artist R. Kelly and Drea Kelly, Buku Abi, has said that her father sexually abused her. In the new documentary, "Karma: A Daughter's Journey", she revealed that R. Kelly molested her when the girl was only 9 years old.
"I remember waking up and feeling him touching me," said the 26-year-old, who used to go by the name Joann Kelly. Further, she added:
"I didn't know what to do, so I stayed there and pretended to be sleeping."
Abi said he couldn't believe what his father was doing to him.
"I didn't want to believe it happened, because for me, he was everything. I didn't know. Even if he was a bad person, he still wouldn't do that to me. I was too afraid to tell anyone. I was very afraid to tell my mother", she confessed.
A lawyer for R. Kelly, who was convicted of sex trafficking in 2022 and then child pornography in 2023, denied Abi's allegations, saying:
"His ex-wife made these allegations several years ago and it has been made clear by the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services that the allegations are baseless," he said.
The lawyer added that the staff who made the documentary did not contact Mr. Kelly nor his team, not even giving him a chance to deny these hurtful allegations. Meanwhile, R. Kelly has been sentenced and could be released from prison in 2045, when he will be 80 years old. Abi, on the other hand, insists that her claims are true and the accusations against her father are based on true events.
She emphasized that she did not have the courage to tell her mother until she was 10 years old. When she was about to witness something like that, her mother accused her in the police, under the pseudonym "Jane Doe". Kelly was not charged in the case, as the lawsuit occurred "too late." Abi said that at that point in her life, she thought she said something like that and no action was taken. Abi said that the abuse she had experienced from her father has greatly affected her mental health for years.
“After I told my mom, I never went there (home) again. My brother, Robert, and sister, Jaah, didn't go either. Even now, I suffer a lot from this event."
Abi continued, saying that she got to a point in her life where she just didn't care if she lived or died and started cutting her veins. When her mother saw her, she suffered an emotional breakdown and told her that she was not well at all. Abi was born from the marriage of R. Kelly and Drea Kelly, who were together from 1996 to 2009. After the confession, Drea supported the children on "Instagram", expressing that she loves them.
