Because of the opera "Sancta", which was shown in Stuttgart, 18 visitors sought medical help. They stated that they were sick because of the explicit scenes they were watching.
One case occurred before the start of the opera and in three cases, an ambulance was called to the scene. This opera contains scenes of sex, injuries, real and fake blood, etc.
"Sancta" by Austrian choreographer Florentine Holzinger is based on the controversial 1920s expressionist opera "Sancta Susanna" by Paul Hindemith, which examined the relationship between celibacy and lust in Christianity. Sebastian Ebling, a spokesman for the Stuttgart State Opera said:
Visitors felt nauseous or dizzy and were given first aid. Some fainted after watching the opera.
He also recommended that audiences read the warnings carefully so they know what to expect. The organizers warned people that this opera is very traumatic.
Throughout the nearly three-hour show, the spokesman said there were two scenes, lasting just a few minutes, that "may be difficult to watch." One scene was described as having a "small piece of flesh" cut from the back of one of the performers and another where two other performers were "drilled together" to attach ropes and lift them up. They also pointed out some effects of light, which could be responsible for some incidents.
Holzinger is known for performances involving nudity, abuse and acrobatics that reference works of classical literature and feminism. Archbishop of Salzburg Franz Lackner declared that this opera is offensive to believers.
It is a parody of the Holy Mass, which is the heart of the faith and not only in the Catholic sense.
