Rare images of Mars published, the planet is not as red as thought (Video)

The European Space Agency (ESA) has released an image of Mars, based on the colors that the human eye can see when standing on the planet's surface.

This image overturns the popular belief that Mars is simply a red planet, as its surface presents a wide variety of shades of gray, yellow, orange, and pale blue.

The polychrome is the result of a diversity of different minerals and its complex geology. According to reports, the global mosaic is made up of tens of thousands of images taken between 2004 and 2022 by the Mars Express spacecraft's HRSC camera.

The resolution of this map is about 2 kilometers per pixel and is the most accurate color map of Mars to date.

The map actually represents the surface of the planet as humans see it with the naked eye and differs significantly from conventional images, which are usually processed for scientific purposes and to enhance color detail.

A key feature of the HRSC camera is its ability to simultaneously capture multi-channel color and generate 3D data. This capability allowed scientists to create an image that is much closer to the natural colors of Mars.

The darker parts of this image indicate ancient lava flows, while the lighter, yellow or pale green areas indicate the presence of minerals that typically form in aqueous environments. These findings further support the hypothesis that liquid water existed in Mars' distant past.
