Rare, cold and extraordinary / The last supermoon appears tonight

This Thursday evening, millions of viewers around the world will have the opportunity to see the Cold Supermoon, the last spectacular lunar phenomenon of 2025 and the finale of this year's trilogy of supermoons.

Astronomers say this moon is particularly rare, not only in size and brightness, but also for the unusual height it will reach in the sky.

It rises so high thanks to an 18.6-year cycle known as the "Major Lunar Standstill," which determines the extreme angle of the Moon's orbit relative to Earth.

This year, this cycle reaches its peak and pushes the Cold Moon higher than any other moon of the year, a phenomenon that will not be repeated until 2042.

The Cold Supermoon is traditionally associated with the onset of winter frost.

True to its name, it appears precisely at the time when temperatures drop significantly throughout the northern hemisphere, giving the phenomenon an even more dramatic atmosphere.

Astronomers advise that the phenomenon be viewed on open horizons, away from light pollution.

In the evening hours, the Moon will appear larger and brighter—up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than a typical full moon.

For sky admirers, this is a golden opportunity: the last supermoon of the year and one of the most special of the decade.

Rare, cold and extraordinary, the Super Cold Moon promises to close the astronomical year 2025 with an unforgettable spectacle.
