Latvia's Male Crisis: Women Are Hiring 'Husbands for the Hour'

An unusual phenomenon is spreading among Latvian women: hiring a so-called "husband for an hour," a service that is growing rapidly amid what local media has dubbed a "male crisis."

With many men emigrating for work abroad and a shortage of professionals for minor home repairs, women are choosing the quickest route: hiring a male helper on an hourly basis for practical tasks and, in some cases, for companionship at events.

According to businesses that offer the service, demand has increased significantly over the past two years. Most clients seek help with simple tasks – furniture assembly, plug repairs, painting, exterior cleaning – but there are also requests for companionship at weddings or activities when the partner is absent for long periods.

Sociologists say the phenomenon reflects changing traditional roles. Male emigration, busy schedules and a desire for practical independence have made this service more in demand than ever. On the other hand, some see it as an indicator of the weakening of family ties.

The average pay ranges from 15 to 25 euros per hour, while companies emphasize that contracts are regulated and physical contact is prohibited.

While the debates continue, one thing is clear: the "husband for an hour" market is booming and is expected to expand further in Latvia, becoming a practical solution for many women in their daily lives.
