The Argentine Football Federation (AFA) has published a personal letter that FIFA president Gianni Infantino sent to its head, Claudio Tapia, after the 2026 World Cup final.
The message came after Argentina's 1-0 extra-time loss to Spain in the final at MetLife Stadium. Although the Argentine national team was left without a trophy, Infantino praised the team's performance and journey during the tournament.
The publication of this letter by the AFA has attracted attention, as such communications usually remain confidential and are not made public. However, the Federation decided to share it with fans through its official channels.
In his letter, the FIFA president emphasizes that the silver medal is an achievement to be appreciated, while underlining that the football played by Argentina contributed to the success and spectacle of the World Cup.
Infantino did not spare praise for coach Lionel Scaloni, the players, the technical and medical staff, as well as the fans who supported the team throughout the competition.
" These achievements are always the result of hard work, professionalism and attention to every detail, but also of passion, dedication and love for the most beautiful sport in the world. This shows that the future of Argentine football is very promising ," Infantino wrote.
He then added:
" Please convey my heartfelt congratulations to all those who were part of this great success: the players, coach Lionel Scaloni, the technical and medical staff, as well as the many fans who supported the team with passion throughout the tournament ."
Infantino's letter has also sparked numerous reactions for another reason: the FIFA president chose not to mention any of the controversies that accompanied Argentina during the World Cup, focusing exclusively on the team's sporting merits and contribution to the development of a spectacular tournament.
