Trouble for BTS member Suga risks jail

Suga, a member of the K-pop supergroup BTS, is facing trouble. He faces jail time or a hefty fine after a breathalyzer test revealed he was over the legal limit when he fell off his e-scooter in Seoul last week.

Suga, who along with the other members of the group has taken a break from music to perform his mandatory national service, was found lying on the ground in Seoul's Yongsan district on August 6 after an accident.

A breathalyzer test conducted on the day of the accident revealed his blood-alcohol concentration was 0.227%, well above the 0.08% level that warrants revoking a driver's license, Yonhap news agency said. ”, citing police sources.

Under South Korea's traffic laws, drink drivers with a blood alcohol level of 0.2% or higher can receive a fine of 10 million mother (£5,710) and 20 million in or a prison sentence of two to in five years.

Driving while intoxicated on an e-scooter carries the same penalties as similar offenses committed while driving a car.

BTS claimed that Suga was using an electric sign at the time of the accident. The 31-year-old said he was fined and his driving license was revoked.

BTS is expected to reunite next year after all seven members have completed their national service. South Korea requires most able-bodied men to serve 18-21 months in the military, but Suga was reportedly allowed to serve civilian duties due to shoulder surgery he underwent in 2020.
