This political caste has been cooperating closely with each other for 34 years, keeping under constant pressure anyone who dares to oppose and denounce its corrupt and clientelistic affairs...
In an unusual move, Argita Berisha, the daughter of former Prime Minister Sali Berisha, has sued "Pamfleti", a media outlet critical of the authorities, in court. The legal move comes as members of her family face serious charges from the country's justice institutions.
Her father, Sali Berisha, is under the "Compulsory Appearance" security measure at the Special Prosecution Office (SPAK), her brother is being investigated in depth by the same prosecutor's office, while her husband is under 'house arrest' by decision of the Special Court.
In these conditions, the question that must be forcefully raised is: what model of governance can the 'Berisha' family offer the country, when its legal and moral integrity is in such serious question? This political caste has been closely cooperating with each other for 34 years, keeping under constant pressure anyone who dares to oppose and denounce its corrupt and clientelistic affairs. We must not forget that Argita Berisha has previously been denounced by foreign businessmen during the period when her father was prime minister, for using her father's power for personal gain. She has also been a business associate with Damir Fazllic, known for his controversial affairs in the region, as well as involved in allegations of land grabbing in the south of the country and in dubious business activities.
The lawsuit against a critical media outlet, while the family faces serious charges and criminal investigations, raises serious doubts about Sali Berisha's real commitment to freedom of expression, transparency and accountability if he were given the opportunity to govern Albania again. This case highlights a deep concern about the way in which politically powerful families treat the media and critical voices, especially when these voices affect personal and family interests.
A family, under the shadow of justice for serious accusations and investigations, should be more reserved and measured in its public and legal reactions. Attacks on the media and attempts to silence them through trials are not only an act against free journalism, but also an indicator of an authoritarian mentality, which cannot and should not have a place in a functioning democracy.
The May 11 elections are approaching, and Albania is faced with an important decision: should it support a family and a political figure who are in open conflict with the law and the new institutions of justice? Or is it time for citizens to demand a model of governance based on moral integrity, legal responsibility, and full respect for media freedom and citizens' rights?
At a time when the country seeks to move forward towards a European future, the Berisha family and the way it responds to accusations, investigations and media criticism, are a clear reflection of the danger posed by its return to power. Albania deserves a leadership that is clean, transparent and respects the rule of law, not a leadership that uses the courts as a tool to silence the truth and protect its own personal interests. / Pamphlet
