The entity exporting waste to Thailand was 'Sokolaj Shpk', a company that has import-export activities of various goods, including the collection and transportation of hazardous waste.
The company in question is 100% owned by Gjovana Sokolaj. The former owners were Doni Sokolaj with 49% of the company and the foreign citizen, Turkish Serdar Can Hakliol, who owned 50% of the shares. This character is thought to have close ties with the boss of "Kurum International". This explains Kurum's exculpatory statement that something seemed to be hidden behind the publication of the scandal. So the company was not just a waste producer, but was suspected of having links with exporters.
In the investigation file, it is stated that the company Sokolaj shpk is the transport company, while "Kurum International" is the source of this cargo. The containers have returned to Albania on November 8, 2024 and they are strictly stored in the Porto Romano area.
"The important thing for us is that we did not allow it to continue to happen. It may have happened many other times before this one that we caught. We must have a plan for this waste and the port and local authorities must be more informed about the cargo coming out of the port, from the country, especially in Durres. I am very afraid that this was only the tip of the iceberg and we will find things, quite possibly worse, that have happened," said Jim Puckett, BAN executive director.
After the uproar caused by the latest incident, we have addressed a request for information to the National Environment Agency which specifies the Kurum-Sokolaj commercial relationship.
The entity Kurum International sh.a has transferred the waste generated by the activity, Zinc Oxide and Iron Oxide, to the entity Sokolaj SH.PK with which it has a Sales contract, concluded on 01.08.2023 with a term of 1 year , while the transfer of waste according to the "Item card" documentation makes the first transfer on 20.12.2020 and ends with the transfer of last on 16.11.2023. /TCH
