If there is a pure symbol of the failure of the international order, it is the fact that in 2026, the world still counts bodies to understand the seriousness of a human crisis.
In Iran, over 2,400 protesters killed were not enough to alarm Western diplomats who, out of fear of "escalation", continue to make empty statements of "deep concern".
In Tehran, the Ayatollah regime has once again chosen the oldest path to survival: brutal repression. And the world has chosen the oldest path to silence: selective diplomacy. The young Iranians who are being killed in the streets today are no less valuable than those in Ukraine, but as long as a gas pipeline or a military alliance is not threatened, they remain “statistics.”
Meanwhile, in the US, Donald Trump, playing the role of Twitter savior, calls for “resistance” and “help is coming.” But in essence, he is exploiting the Iranian tragedy to score points in his political campaigns. The same thing happened with Ukraine, with Venezuela, with Cuba. Popular revolts become political ammunition for Western leaders who want to appear strong, but without having the courage to really confront repressive regimes.
For the West, the death of a protester only matters when it goes viral. Only when there are cameras. Only when the internet is not blocked. Only when the victim has a name that can be pronounced on CNN.
Iran is not the only case. It is a mirror. A mirror of an international order that values human life according to energy interests, geographical proximity, and media visibility. That calculates horror with Excel, and only intervenes when the body count exceeds a “tolerable” threshold.
This is no longer foreign policy. It is corpse politics. And what we are seeing in Iran today will follow us tomorrow in all the silent peripheries of the world, including the Balkans, which are always a semi-silence away from explosion./ Pamphlet
