From "leader of the free world" to despiser of the blood of allies; Trump strips himself of any conservative values...
Donald Trump's recent statements, made at an electoral meeting in New Hampshire, where he mocked the participation and sacrifices of Italian soldiers in Afghanistan, have caused not only indignation in Italy, but have also disturbed a large part of the right-wing spectrum throughout Europe.
"The Italians were just there to take pictures. I don't know if any of them ever fired a shot," Trump is quoted as saying in The New York Times (January 23, 2026), casting aspersions not only on the reputation of the Italian Armed Forces but on the very ethics of the Euro-Atlantic alliance. This statement raises a much deeper question than can be answered by a diplomatic response: who is this man who claims to represent the West while treading on the blood of his own allies?
Italy is not a power that appears on international stages for military protagonism. But in the face of NATO commitments, it has been one of the most committed countries, contributing 53 soldiers killed and over 700 wounded in the difficult campaigns in Afghanistan, especially in the western region of Herat, where Italian operations have been praised even by the Pentagon itself for their professionalism and positive impact on the civilian population (source: US Department of Defense Report on ISAF, 2012).
But Italy was not alone. Within the framework of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), European states have paid a high price. According to Brookings Institution and NATO data:
The United Kingdom lost 457 soldiers ;
Germany lost 59 soldiers;
France lost 89 soldiers;
Poland lost 44 soldiers;
Denmark lost 43 soldiers (for a country with 5.8 million inhabitants, this was the highest per capita loss in Europe);
Canada (although not European, a key ally) lost 158 soldiers.
In total, over 1,150 non-American soldiers were killed in Afghanistan , the vast majority from European countries. To belittle this commitment with a derogatory joke is not only a disregard for a military contribution, but is a politically irresponsible act that undermines one of the pillars of NATO: mutual respect and trust between allies.
What makes Trump's statement even more unacceptable is the fact that it comes from a figure who claims to be representative of the traditional American right; a political line that has historically been closely associated with honoring the armed forces, cultivating patriotism, and loyalty to international partners.
From the era of Ronald Reagan to George W. Bush, the American right has maintained an iron-clad ethic of protecting the military and solemnly commemorating their sacrifices. All of these presidents have made it clear that if someone has shed blood alongside American soldiers on any battlefield, they have earned the eternal respect and gratitude of the United States. And now, a man who claims to be the heir to that tradition behaves with a fundamental lack of empathy and respect that befits a populist cynic more than a conservative leader.
In this context, the reaction coming from the European right is more than justified: it is an identity crisis. How is it possible that a right-wing figure, who speaks of a "strong state" and "order", would reject the honor of fallen soldiers?
Can the European right; in Italy, Poland, Hungary or elsewhere, accept that the symbolic leader of the global sovereignist line is a man who mocks the fallen and undermines the very concept of national sovereignty they claim to defend?
Let’s be clear: beyond Trump’s personal character, this event is a broader signal of the moral crisis of political leaders who treat diplomacy as spectacle and sacrifice as statistics. Ridiculing an ally’s soldiers is not just a blunder; it is an act that calls into question the very cohesion of the West in the face of global challenges. At a time when Russia is testing the limits of NATO and China is building new strategic alliances, domestic attacks on allies are a luxury no democracy can afford.
Trump has reduced the West's morality to an electoral bargain. But what happened to the Italian soldiers is more than a diplomatic incident; it is a sign that, unless the leaders of the global right return to enduring values like respect, sacrifice, and honesty, then we are no longer dealing with a conservative right, but with a populist farce that no longer has any connection to any serious political tradition.
In the end, we who belong to a world that still believes in values have the right to ask: Who the hell are you to speak on behalf of the West, and humiliate those who gave their lives for it? / Pamphlet
