The Balkans at Auction: Ankara, Belgrade and the Shadow of the Trump-Putin Deal

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić's statement that "Turkey does not want the stability of the Western Balkans" is not just diplomatic nervousness before the meeting with Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The statement is a clear signal that Belgrade is reading a change in the global winds and that our region may once again be at the big bargaining table. At a time when communication channels and indirect talks between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin about a reconfiguration of the security order in Europe are rumored on the horizon, every regional actor is positioning itself for the new phase.

Turkey has for years built a multifaceted presence in the Balkans: economic, cultural, religious and, more recently, military. From infrastructure investments in Serbia and Bosnia, to open support for Kosovo's institutions; Ankara has cultivated a role that goes beyond neo-Ottoman nostalgia and enters the logic of a middle power that seeks room for maneuver between Washington and Moscow. Turkey is a member of NATO, but it is no longer a linear player in the Western camp; it operates with strategic autonomy, buying Russian systems when it interests it and selling drones in sensitive areas like the Balkans.

This is precisely where Belgrade's concern lies. Serbia knows that if the European security architecture enters a phase of revision, whether through a new US-Russian agreement on Ukraine or on spheres of influence; the Balkans risk being treated as a negotiable periphery.

In this context, the military strengthening of Kosovo with Turkish technology is not read only as a bilateral Ankara-Pristina issue, but as part of a broader chain of balances. Vučić is sending a message not only to Ankara, but also to Moscow and Washington: Serbia will not be a spectator if someone decides for the region at its expense.

On the other hand, Erdogan understands that any gap the West leaves in the Balkans is space for Turkey. If the US under Donald Trump focuses on big deals with Russia and domestic priorities, while the EU remains divided and enlargement-weary, then Ankara emerges as a power that offers rapid investment, political influence and selective military support. This is not necessarily destabilizing in itself, but it becomes so when it is perceived as interfering in fragile ethnic and state balances.

For Albania and the Albanian factor, the challenge is not to read the Turkish presence only through a sentimental or historical prism. Military and political support is important, but the strategic orientation remains Euro-Atlantic. If the new order is being shaped through silent bargaining between Washington and Moscow, then Tirana should seek clear guarantees within NATO and the EU, not rely on temporary balances of power.

Turkey's game in our backyard is intelligent, flexible and bold. But in a region where history has shown that big games are often played on the backs of small ones, every move must be read carefully. The stability of the Balkans will not depend only on Vučić's statements or Erdogan's ambition, but on how global powers will reposition the map of influence. And when that happens, no one will have the luxury of neutrality. / Pamphlet
