American populism has nothing in common with the conservative nobility of Europe...

From "natural ally" to political burden: why Donald Trump has nothing in common with the historical nobility of the European right

In European capitals, especially among the conservative right, an uneasy feeling is spreading: Donald Trump is not the man who was sold for years as the great model of the revival of the Western right. On the contrary, he is emerging as a destabilizing factor, often in open conflict with the very political DNA of European conservatism.

A right without tradition and without responsibility

The European right; from the classical conservatives to the old Christian Democrats, is built on institutions, a state-building ethic, and respect for alliances. It was born from the idea of order, responsibility, and the rule of law. Trump, in essence, represents the opposite: politics as spectacle, alliance as bargaining, and the state as personal property.

There is nothing “noble” about an approach that threatens NATO whenever it suits them electorally, that treats Europe as a burden rather than a partner, and that reduces diplomacy to public insults or economic blackmail. This is not the conservative right; this is populism stripped of all historical responsibility.

From ideological illusion to strategic disappointment

For a while, some European right-wing parties saw Trump as a global “locomotive” against progressive liberalism. But today, the reality is more brutal: Trump does not fight for values, but for himself. He does not build an ideological axis, but relationships of dependence. He does not seek allies, but vassals.

This is why more and more right-wing European leaders, even those who are ideologically skeptical of Brussels, are realizing that closeness to Trump does not give you weight, but rather takes away your dignity. Instead of strengthening European sovereignty, it produces uncertainty and fragmentation.

The European right faces a historic choice

Today, the European right is facing a serious test: either it will maintain its state-forming and Western character, or it will slide towards imitating an American model that has no roots, tradition, or respect for Europe.

Trump is not the heir of Churchill, Adenauer or De Gasperi. He does not represent conservatism, but the American crisis. And the sooner this is understood in Europe, the sooner the European right will be freed from an illusion that is costing them dearly; politically and strategically./ Pamphlet
