"Rama resigns"/ 9th day of protest, thousands of citizens march
Gathering at Skanderbeg Square

What started in Zvërnec as opposition to a single project is turning day by day into a movement against the entire political caste. Protesters are demanding the removal of Edi Rama, while calls against Sali Berisha are also heard in the square.

The civic protest has entered its ninth day today, as thousands of citizens from all over Albania have gathered in Skanderbeg Square to then march towards the Prime Minister's Office.

If in the early days the focus of the reaction was Zvërnec, today the message of the protest seems clearly broader. The anger is no longer directed solely at a project or a government decision, but at what the protesters consider to be the political caste that has governed the country for decades.

"Rama go away", "Rama in prison, Berisha in prison" and "Rama resign" are the chants that dominate today's march in the center of Tirana.

It is precisely this transformation that distinguishes the protest from other civic reactions of recent years. Zvërnec remains the spark that ignited the revolt, but the cause has now transcended the boundaries of a local battle and is taking on the features of a national movement against the political establishment.

Unlike the first few days, today's protest has brought citizens from many areas of the country, while the mobilization has expanded beyond Tirana. Participants speak of a dissatisfaction that is not only related to a specific project, but also to the governance model and the lack of political alternatives.

The number of protesters is significantly larger than in the early days of the movement. Skanderbeg Square was filled from the first hours of the gathering, while the crowd then headed towards the Prime Minister's Office, chanting against the government.

Even the protest the day before showed that the movement is not losing energy. After the rally ended, hundreds of citizens continued to march for several hours on the streets of Tirana, turning the capital into the center of the protest.

As the protest enters its ninth day, one thing seems clear: what began in Zvërnec is no longer just the issue of Zvërnec. For many of the participants, the battle has now shifted to a direct confrontation with the political class that has dominated Albania for the past 35 years.
