Claude Malhuret, the leader of France's center-right Independents party, has called President Donald Trump a dictator and compared him to the Roman emperor Nero.
In a speech to the French Senate, Malhuret described the Trump administration as the "Court of Nero," the Roman ruler known for his brutality toward his family and his persecution of Christians after a great fire that destroyed Rome.
Malhuret described the Trump administration as "with a fiery emperor, with submissive courtiers."
Malhure said that the US now has, for the first time in history, a head of state who has unconditionally capitulated to his enemy, referring here to Vladimir Putin.
"Never has the United States had a president who capitulated to the enemy. Never has an American president supported an aggressor against an ally. Ukraine risks being abandoned and Russia risks being strengthened. Washington is becoming Nero's court," he said.
Who was Nero?
Nero (37–68 AD) was a Roman emperor known for his violent and contested rule. He was the son of the emperor Gnaeus Domitius Ahenobarbus and Agrippina the Younger, and took power in 54 AD after the death of the emperor Claudius, whom he had succeeded as heir.
Nero is known for a number of violent acts during his reign. He is famous for the murder of his mother, Agrippina, and his wife, Octavia, as well as for the persecution and execution of Christians, whom he accused of causing a great fire that swept through the city of Rome in 64 AD. This famous fire is often associated with the image of Nero, who is said to have watched the city burn while playing the violin, although this detail may be a myth.
Nero is also known for his political management style, often using brutal and abusive methods to maintain his power. His reign is often described as a period of corruption, debauchery, and violence.
